🔄 Left-Hand Driving
Jamaica drives on the left side of the road, same as the UK. If you're from a right-hand driving country, take a few minutes to get comfortable before hitting the main road. Most rental cars are right-hand drive with the steering wheel on the right.
⚡ Speed Limits
Speed limits in Jamaica are typically:
- 50 km/h (30 mph) — In towns and built-up areas
- 80 km/h (50 mph) — On open roads and highways
- 110 km/h (70 mph) — On the North-South Highway (toll road)
Police speed traps are common, especially near towns. Stick to the limit.
🛣️ Road Conditions
Main highways between Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Kingston are generally in good condition. However, rural roads can have potholes, narrow curves, and no street lights at night. Drive carefully, especially in the mountains and countryside.
⛽ Gas Stations
Gas stations are plentiful on main roads. Most accept cash (JMD) and some accept credit cards. Fuel is sold in litres. A full tank for a sedan typically costs around J$8,000–12,000 (~US$50–75). Popular stations include Texaco, Total, and Petcom.
🅿️ Parking
In Montego Bay and other towns, paid parking lots are common and inexpensive (J$200–500). Don't leave valuables visible in the car. Hotels and resorts typically have free guest parking.
📱 Navigation
Google Maps works well in Jamaica for main routes. Download offline maps before your trip in case of spotty cell service in rural areas. Waze is also popular among locals.
🚧 Toll Roads
The Highway 2000 (North-South Link) between Montego Bay and Kingston has toll booths. Tolls range from J$300–700 per section. Cash only at most toll booths. The toll road is faster and in much better condition than the old mountain route.
